Unlimited Roaming Data Guideline

Our Unlimited Data Plans are intended for travelers who need reliable access to their apps and communications while roaming. They are not intended for high frequency or intense data usage, automated or machine usage, or large file transfers.

The daily allowance

Unlimited plans run at full speed for the first 2 GB every 24 hours. After that, the connection keeps working at 1 Mbit/s until the allowance resets, which it does every 24 hours, for every day of your plan. Nothing is switched off and there is no overage charge: you will never be billed more than the price you paid.

1 Mbit/s still carries messaging, maps and navigation, email, web pages, music and standard-definition video calls. It is not enough for high-definition video or for large downloads. We would rather you know that before you travel than discover it on the road.

Sharing your connection is included. When you use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop, a tablet or a travel companion, that traffic draws on the same allowance as the phone itself. There is no separate, smaller cap on tethering.

This allowance applies to unlimited plans only. Our fixed-volume plans — 1 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB and up, depending on the destination — have no daily ceiling: the volume you bought is yours to use at full speed, on whichever days you choose. If you expect to work from a tethered laptop, a fixed-volume plan will usually suit you better than an unlimited one.

Examples of Regular Roaming Usage

✅  Streaming music or video a few hours a day - OK!

✅  Using social media apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok - OK!

✅  Browsing the internet, email, and messaging throughout the day - OK!

✅  Using Mobile Hotspot for your laptop or tablet to join Zoom calls - OK!

✅  Connecting to your corporate VPN for regular business usage - OK!

Examples of Usage That May Be Limited

❌  Downloading huge files from a server - Better to use Wi-Fi.

Uploading/downloading an entire library of photos or music  - Better to use Wi-Fi.

❌  Using the Mobile Hotspot as a router or proxy for multiple computers - Better to use Wi-Fi.

❌  Connecting to a TV and streaming video 12 hours a day - Better to use Wi-Fi.

❌  Using the connection for BitTorrent or P2P file sharing uploads - Better to use Wi-Fi.

Estimating your own usage

The guideline above describes the limits. What it cannot tell you is where your own travel sits against them — most trips never come close. Our travel data calculator turns your trip length and daily habits into an estimate in gigabytes, so you can choose between an unlimited plan and a fixed-volume one on the basis of a number rather than a guess.
