eTravelSim alternatives: hotspot, balance, price

Price: they win more rows than we do

Here are three identical tiers — same allowance, same duration, data only — on the four destinations we surveyed. We are not going to show you only the rows we win.

Where RapideSIM loses to eTravelSim

• Price, on most tiers, and not only the ones above. On 26 August 2026 we priced 571 strictly comparable tiers across 96 countries against eTravelSim and Simbye. We were more expensive than the cheaper of the two on 489 of the 571, or 86 %, with a median gap of +36.1 % taken over all 571 tiers — the ones we win included, not only the ones we lose — and we were never the cheapest on 20 GB for 30 days or on unlimited for 30 days. That is our own survey, not a public page, and it is the most important number on this page. The four destinations in the table above flatter us; the wider catalogue does not.
• The daily allowance. eTravelSim publishes 4 GB per day before the slowdown. We publish 2 GB. Twice as much high-speed data per day, on paper, before either of us drops to 1 Mbps. Wider than this page: six of the eight sellers we survey publish a daily figure, and our 2 GB is joint last of the six, tied with Nomad and with Simbye — not second-to-last.
• Reputation. 3.9 out of 5 from 765 reviews against our 2.5 from 54 (Trustpilot, 29 August 2026). Fifty-four reviews is a thin sample, but it is the sample a buyer sees, and the score is ours to improve.
• Calls. They sell plans with 100 or 200 minutes of local calls. We sell data only, on every product we have. If you need a number that rings, we are not a candidate.
• Japan for a month. $120.99 against their $69.99. We were the most expensive of the seven sellers we priced on that exact tier. If that is your trip, do not buy it from us.

Where we are genuinely different

Coverage of the unlimited tier, not the size of it. An unlimited tier exists on 91 of our 103 products — 88 % of the catalogue — against 141 of 227 at eTravelSim (62 %) and 56 of 170 at Simbye (33 %). A product counts here if the word "unlimited" appears in its title or in the title of any of its variants — that is the whole rule, and you can re-run it in a minute. All three counted from each shop's own public catalogue file on 29 August 2026, which is why these three numbers are comparable and why we do not publish one for Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad or Yesim: they expose no equivalent file, and we are not going to estimate it. The claim is about width, not generosity: our daily allowance is the smaller one, as the row above says.

Hotspot, and how you check what is left. On hotspot the difference is real but it is a difference of clarity, not of permission: their eSIM FAQ refuses it on standard unlimited plans (etravelsim.com/pages/faq-for-esim), a product page for the same kind of plan says "Tethering / Hotspot: Supported", and the "Truly Unlimited Data" range allows it outright. We publish one rule for the whole catalogue: tethering to a laptop or a tablet, not router-style use across several machines, drawing on the same 2 GB every 24 hours as the phone.

On checking what is left, we have to shrink a claim we made earlier. eTravelSim now offers a "View Balance" button in its account section as well as the email to support (etravelsim.com/pages/faq, read 29 August 2026), so "balance by email only" is out of date and we are not going to keep selling against it. What is left is a smaller, checkable difference: their self-service route needs a customer account, ours needs an order number and nothing else (rapidesim.com FAQ and top-up page, read 29 August 2026). If neither of those matters to you, the price argument above should win.

Who each one is right for

Choose eTravelSim if…

Price is the deciding factor, especially on 30-day plans, and you use the data on one phone. Also if you need local call minutes, or if you want their "Truly Unlimited Data" range specifically — which does allow hotspot, at a higher price ($26.90 for 7 days in the United States against $21.00 for the standard unlimited plan, read 29 August 2026).

Choose Airalo if…

You want one hotspot rule instead of three. Airalo's allowance is 3 GB per day at up to 20 Mbps before the slowdown — smaller than eTravelSim's published 4 GB, larger than the 2 GB that Simbye and we both publish — and hotspot is simply counted against it, with no second answer elsewhere in the catalogue. Add top-ups without reinstalling and a site in 49 languages: it is the well-documented, low-surprise choice, not the most generous one.

Choose Simbye if…

You want a phone number and calls alongside data, or the lowest 7-day unlimited prices in this group: $18.95 in the United States, Japan and Turkey, one flat figure on the three (read 29 August 2026 on simbye.com). Their unlimited tier covers 33 % of their catalogue, so check that your destination has one before you plan around it.

Choose RapideSIM if…

You tether a laptop or a tablet and want that written into the policy rather than excluded by it; you want to see your own usage from an order number, with no customer account, no app and no email; or the plan you need has no unlimited tier in their catalogue and has one in ours — that tier exists on 88 % of our products against 62 % of theirs, so open both destination pages before you assume. On price, be clear-eyed: on most tiers they are cheaper, and on Japan for a month they are much cheaper.

How this comparison was made

• Every figure was read on the seller's own public pages on 29 August 2026, except the 96-country price survey, which is ours and dates from 26 August 2026. Nothing here comes from a third-party blog, an affiliate roundup or a price aggregator.
• Prices are in US dollars, data-only, at identical tiers: same allowance, same duration. Some sellers display euros by default in Europe; we switched the currency selector to USD before reading.
• eTravelSim lists several products for one destination at different prices — at least five for the United States. Any sentence of the form "the eTravelSim price for X is Y" is wrong by construction, including ours: we priced the main product page and named the alternative range where it changes the answer.
• Catalogue percentages are counted from public catalogue files, which only Shopify-based shops expose. That is why three sellers have a percentage here and the others have "not checked".
• We did not test network speed, latency or coverage anywhere. No claim on this page is about how fast any of these eSIMs runs.
• "Not checked in this survey" means we did not verify it — never that the seller fails on it.
• Two figures on this page were corrected on 29 August 2026 after re-reading the sources, both against us: the hotspot quotation comes from etravelsim.com/pages/faq-for-esim and not from their general FAQ, and their balance check is no longer email-only. We would rather correct a page than defend it.
• Prices and review scores move. Use the links, not our numbers, when the stake is real money.
