The VoIP restriction, explained honestly
Voice and video calling over apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger and Skype is restricted on networks in the UAE. Messaging in those apps works normally — it is the calling feature that is affected.
You will find providers implying that their eSIM sidesteps this because it connects as a roaming visitor. Behaviour can differ between networks and over time, but it is not something to rely on. Plan your trip on the assumption that app calling may not work, and you will not be disappointed:
- Hotel Wi-Fi is frequently the practical workaround, since some venues run their own arrangements.
- Licensed local services (Botim and similar) are the sanctioned route for calls.
- Standard voice calls on your own number still work — that is your physical SIM, not the eSIM, and roaming call charges apply.
Everything else — maps, ride-hailing, browsing, streaming, messaging, email, social media — works exactly as you would expect.
How much data the UAE uses
- Stopover of two or three days: 1 GB is enough.
