South Korea expects a phone to keep up. Seoul's metro is signed, mapped and paid for digitally, the KTX puts Busan a little over two and a half hours from the capital, and Jeju is a short hop from Gimpo. In between sit the hanok lanes of Jeonju, the burial mounds at Gyeongju, Gamcheon's painted hillside and a queue outside every restaurant worth eating in.
Funding that through roaming is a strange choice. Data bought in advance costs what it says it costs, whether you spend it underground on the metro or halfway up a mountain.
Data expectations. Four or five days in Seoul, heavy on maps and translation, sits near 3 GB. Two weeks taking in Busan, Gyeongju and Jeju with daily photo and video uploads runs 10 GB. Streaming on trains or working remotely suggests 20 GB or more.
- Cities are dense. Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon and Gwangju are exceptionally well served, and that includes the underground metro network.
- Mountains and islands are the exception. Ridge trails in Seoraksan and Jirisan, and the ferry crossings out to islands such as Ulleungdo, lose service.
- Local map apps do more. International mapping gives limited walking and driving directions here, so most visitors install a Korean alternative before arriving.
Timing matters more than in most countries. Cherry blossom moves north through late March and April, autumn colour moves south from October, and both are tracked week by week online — as is the queue length outside the café you were planning to visit that afternoon.
