What happens if I run out of data on my eSIM?
Your eSIM stops carrying data and goes offline. Nothing is charged automatically — there is no overage fee and no surprise bill. To get back online, connect to Wi-Fi and add a new package to the same eSIM.
What does not happen
A prepaid travel eSIM cannot bill you beyond what you paid for. When the data is used up, the connection stops; it does not roll over to a per-megabyte rate. That is the whole difference with roaming on your home contract, where going over is a charge rather than a stop.
Your usual number is untouched
Only the data line stops. Your physical SIM keeps working exactly as before, so calls and SMS on your own number continue to arrive — billed by your home operator at its own roaming rates, as they were before. If you had switched cellular data off on your home line to avoid roaming charges, leave it off: switching it back on to get online is precisely what triggers those charges.
Getting back online
- Connect to any Wi-Fi network — hotel, café, airport, a travel companion's hotspot.
- Open the top-up page and enter your order number.
- Choose a package and pay. The data lands on the same eSIM within seconds.
You do not reinstall anything. The eSIM stays on your phone, the profile stays in your settings, and the new data attaches to it.
How to avoid it entirely
Check your balance before it becomes urgent. The same page that sells top-ups also shows what you have left, so a look every couple of days is enough — and topping up while you still have data means you never have to find Wi-Fi to do it.
